Scotty Street Assignment 2

Seas of people flooding the hallways
Moving along in imperfect harmony;
I will not lose my way
as I continue to look ahead.

I'm always thinking of a better life,
one with freedom and personality,
one with color and enthusiasm,
as I sit in a beige, plain classroom.

I always think of learning what I want,
about Adam Smith and John Keynes,
as I hear a mention of derivatives
wasting away in the back of the classroom.

How I long to live on my own,
a world with no curfew,
a life with no limits,
but I must be home now.

I believe my poem has a very distinct tone, one of chilling coolness and one of dark melodrama. My choice of diction such as "plain", "wasting away", and "imperfect harmony" helps to show my tone towards high school as being confining and dull. The allusions to Smith and Keynes helped emphasize my desire to study Business instead of "wasting away" learning Calculus. The syntax and line breaks I used emphasized the last line in each stanza, which is what I was going for, especially in developing my dull and plain tone, which was meant to mirror how I felt about high school.
