Kaitlyn Nunnelley Assignment 2

One year to go to
all the football games,
all the dances, all the high school parties.

One year to finish
SAT's, ACT's,
college visits, applications, essays.

One year to say goodbye
to teachers, friends, and family.

One year to make sure
you do it all right.

One year to grow up.

My poem is called "One Year," to show that that's all we have left together. As the poem goes on the syntax gets shorter as the year goes on and time continues to fly by, showing the decreasing amount of time we have and a sense of urgency to get it all done. A sad tone is created by starting with trivial things like sporting events and parties, but advancing to stressful things that can decide where we go, and then to leaving our loved ones. I repeated "one year" to make the reader realize that is all the time we have until we are adults.
