Jesse Konopka Assignment 3

1. For the poem I decided to go with a classic, "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost. The reason for this is that the poem itself is very well known and I will not need to be as specific when providing examples. Now, the major poetic device seen throughout this and most of Frost's works is the use of allegory, that is the use of extended metaphor without directly stating the subject of comparison. However, it can be clearly seen that the subject of comparison in this piece is the theme, which is that sometimes being a pioneer in a field can be difficult, but it is rewarding if you are successful. Now, I know this is a bit of a cliche, but when Frost wrote the poem I can assure you it was not. Back to the main subject; the allegorical nature of this piece directly ties in with the aforementioned theme by showing how Frost taking the "road less travelled" by using allegories instead of making a direct statement makes "all the difference" by showing how more effective it was to utilize allegory instead making a direct statement.

2. Immediately, I can already tell I can agree with Pollock. His work and his ideal on the concept of art are the embodiment of my beliefs on the subject. Now, while I do not consider myself an "art enthusiast" and honestly do no care for the physical nature of Pollock's work, I do admire how he questions the nature of art itself in the process. I admire the philosophy behind the nature of art, and that is what Pollock comments on in everything he does. By making his artwork so simplistic he makes a statement about the nature of art, which is that art is a much more effective means of communicating emotions and ideals through empathy, and not reasoning. Those with the skill to do so can convey in a single painting what someone fails to in an hour long speech. His artwork may not be beautiful in a traditional sense, but that does not matter, because it does show his eloquence in communication.
